Love That Holds Us Together
In a small sewing classroom, amid fabric, thread, and quiet conversation, God showed up in a powerful and unexpected way.
Our Afghan Women’s Sewing Program is often filled with laughter, creativity, and steady progress as women learn practical skills, build friendships, and take steps toward financial independence. But one class this year unfolded differently, becoming a sacred moment of shared humanity and faith.
Just days after a tragic national event that dominated the news, the women arrived carrying visible heaviness. The violence itself was heartbreaking, but what weighed most on many of them was fear. Fear that the actions of one individual would cast a shadow over Afghan families everywhere. Fear that their neighbors might see them not as mothers, students, and friends, but through the lens of suspicion.
Kyle, our volunteer leader of the sewing group, sensed the weight in the room and gently invited space for conversation. The women spoke quietly at first, then more openly, sharing grief, concern, and sorrow for the lives lost. They expressed deep sadness that such an act could be associated with their homeland, especially as they work so hard to build new lives marked by peace and contribution.
In that tender moment, emotion overflowed. One woman approached Kyle and embraced her, weeping. Others sat silently, some with tears in their eyes. There was no fixing the pain, only holding it together.
Kyle reminded the women that they were not alone. That God had brought them together in this place, at this time. That community is not formed in the absence of hardship, but often through it. Slowly, the atmosphere in the room shifted from fear to comfort, from isolation to connection.
Then, softly and almost in unison, the women said, “We love you, teacher.”
It was a holy moment. A reminder that God’s presence is often found not in grand gestures, but in shared tears, quiet faith, and steadfast love.
This is what our programs are truly about. Sewing, tutoring, driving practice, and job readiness are important, but they are not the whole story. At the heart of our work are relationships, safe spaces, trust built over time. The assurance that every person is seen, valued, and loved.
Because of our faithful supporters, volunteers, and prayer partners, moments like this are possible. Because of you, Afghan families are finding not just resources, but refuge. Not just services, but community.
We are grateful to be witnesses to the ways God is moving through ordinary acts of compassion to bring healing and hope. And we are honored to walk alongside families as they rebuild, one stitch, one conversation, and one moment of love at a time.
